Fully Subscribed reinforced her position among the nation’s leading older fillies and mares with a commanding Juddmonte Spinster victory, Agate rallied through traffic to capture the Castle & Key Bourbon, and British-based Adonius delivered an emotional international victory in the Indian Summer before setting his sights on the Breeders’ Cup.
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Keeneland completed its opening Fall Stars Weekend on Sunday, October 4, with two more horses claiming victories in Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” events—and another international contender announcing his intentions for championship weekend.
Fully Subscribed overwhelmed her rivals in the $650,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1), strengthening her credentials for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. One race later, Agate produced a decisive stretch rally in the $400,000 Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes (G2) to secure his place in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
Earlier on the card, British-based Adonius overcame a poor start to capture the Indian Summer Stakes (G3), giving trainer Rebecca Menzies her first victory—and first runner—outside her home country. Following the race, Menzies confirmed the plan is to keep Adonius in the United States and target the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1).
Fully Subscribed Cruises in the Juddmonte Spinster
Fully Subscribed delivered the afternoon’s most authoritative performance, drawing away from Counting Stars to win the Juddmonte Spinster by 3¼ lengths.
Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Chad Brown, Fully Subscribed settled just outside pacesetter Immersive in a compact three-horse field following the scratches of Regaled and Snowyte.
Immersive established moderate fractions of :24.19, :48.43 and 1:13.00, with Fully Subscribed traveling comfortably at her flank and Counting Stars tracking from the inside.
Prat allowed the favorite to advance approaching the three-furlong pole. Fully Subscribed moved alongside Immersive and forged to the front while still traveling comfortably near the five-sixteenths marker.
Once asked to finish the job, the result was never seriously in doubt.

Fully Subscribed entered the stretch in command, shifted outward while opening her advantage and continued strongly to the wire. She completed 1 1/8 miles over the fast main track in 1:50.60.
Counting Stars attempted to remain within striking distance around the far turn but could not match the winner’s acceleration. She finished second, six lengths ahead of Immersive.
The victory provided another Grade 1 success for Fully Subscribed, Klaravich Stables’ 4-year-old daughter of Tiz the Law. She entered the Spinster following a dominant victory in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, giving her consecutive top-level wins with Prat aboard.
Fully Subscribed had already qualified for the Breeders’ Cup through the Personal Ensign, but her Spinster victory reconfirmed her position in the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) and, perhaps even more importantly, demonstrated her effectiveness over the same Keeneland surface she will encounter on championship weekend.
Agate Finds a Way Through in the Castle & Key Bourbon
The $400,000 Castle & Key Bourbon presented a very different challenge.
While Fully Subscribed enjoyed an uncomplicated stalking trip, Agate had to overcome traffic before delivering his winning run in the 1 1/16-mile turf event.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Kelsey Danner, Agate saved ground toward the rear of the field as Trim Castle sprinted clear through fractions of :22.39 and :46.27.

Trim Castle maintained his advantage through six furlongs in 1:10.91, with Heracles leading the pursuit. The early leader began to weaken entering the stretch, and Heracles briefly took command as the closers gathered behind him.
Agate, seventh during the opening stages, encountered traffic near the three-sixteenths pole. Gaffalione remained patient before moving the gelding four wide and between horses.
When an opening appeared, Agate split rivals and accelerated past Real Goodbar approaching the final sixteenth. He then drew clear to win by 1¾ lengths, completing the distance over firm turf in 1:42.64.
Favorite Bold Leadership rallied from eighth to claim second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Real Goodbar.
The victory was especially meaningful for Dede McGehee, who bred and owns the Kentucky-bred son of Karakontie. Agate entered the Bourbon after finishing third in the Juvenile Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs, where he also endured a difficult trip.
At Keeneland, Agate demonstrated the composure and acceleration required of a top juvenile turf prospect. He handled adversity, responded when Gaffalione found racing room and finished with authority.
The performance earned Agate an automatic berth in the $1 million Brown Advisory Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).
Adonius Turns Difficult Start Into International Breakthrough
One of Sunday’s most compelling stories came outside the official Breeders’ Cup Challenge races.
British-based Adonius overcame a poor beginning and produced a dramatic late surge to capture the $350,000 Indian Summer Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select (G3).
Ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez for trainer Rebecca Menzies, Adonius was last early after breaking slowly. The early setback initially concerned his trainer, but a strong pace gave Velazquez an opportunity to settle the colt and allow him to find his rhythm.

“My heart sank a little bit,” Menzies admitted afterward. “But they were going a good gallop, and he’s never had a pace to aim at in the UK before, and Johnny got him really settled.”
Velazquez remained patient before taking Adonius to the outside for his final challenge.
What followed was a furious four-horse finish.
Adonius swept down the outside to join Love a Warrior, Wood Island and Ruiva, putting his head down at precisely the right moment to prevail by a head, with only a neck separating the first four horses.
He completed 5½ furlongs over firm turf in 1:03.46.
Menzies initially believed her colt might have to settle for a minor placing.
“I actually thought, ‘Oh, great, he’s probably going to finish fourth here,’” she said. “Then when I saw him really rallying and putting his head down, it’s a testament to the horse.”
The victory carried additional significance for the trainer and her team.
Adonius was not simply Menzies’ first international winner—he was her first runner abroad.
“There’s an absolute army of people at home and here, since we got here, that helped us get him to this stage,” Menzies said. “It’s our first winner, our first runner abroad, and it’s absolutely magical.”
And the international adventure is not finished.
Menzies confirmed after the race that Adonius will remain in the United States, with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) now the target.
“We’ll keep him here now, and on to the Breeders’ Cup,” she said.
Menzies also credited Adonius’ ownership group for embracing an ambitious international campaign and allowing the team to take its chance at Keeneland.
“There’s thousands of people behind this horse,” she said. “It’s a testament to the owners to say, ‘Let’s roll the dice and bring him here.’”
The gamble paid off—and now Adonius gets the opportunity to take another swing at Keeneland on racing’s biggest stage.
An Important Breeders’ Cup Distinction
Although Adonius is headed toward the Breeders’ Cup, there is an important distinction between his victory and those of Fully Subscribed and Agate.
Sunday’s official Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series results were:
- Fully Subscribed — Juddmonte Spinster (G1) → Breeders’ Cup Distaff
- Agate — Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) → Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
The Indian Summer (G3) was not a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race, meaning Adonius did not receive an automatic berth through Sunday’s victory.
Nevertheless, his trainer made the team’s intentions unmistakable: Adonius is staying in America and is being pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
That adds another intriguing international dimension to a championship that will be contested over the very same Keeneland turf course.
Fall Stars Weekend Sends Eight Challenge Winners Toward the Breeders’ Cup
Sunday’s results brought Keeneland’s three-day Fall Stars Weekend to a close after eight Breeders’ Cup Challenge races across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Fully Subscribed used the Spinster to confirm that her Personal Ensign performance was no isolated breakthrough. She controlled an accomplished field with authority and will return to Keeneland as a proven Grade 1 winner over the championship surface.
Agate’s victory offered a different kind of evidence. The juvenile had to negotiate traffic, change course and split horses before producing the strongest closing run.
And Adonius supplied perhaps Sunday’s most international storyline—traveling from Britain for his trainer’s first-ever runner abroad, overcoming a poor break, surviving a four-horse thriller and earning the opportunity to remain in Kentucky for an even bigger assignment.
Two “Win and You’re In” winners punched—or reinforced—their tickets to the Breeders’ Cup. A third winner didn’t receive an automatic berth, but made his intentions equally clear: Adonius is staying in America, and his next target is the Breeders’ Cup.
