RHETORICAL - Turf Mile G1 2026
Evanescence produced a last-gasp victory in the Thoroughbred Club of America, American History remained perfect in the Breeders’ Futurity, and Rhetorical successfully defended his Coolmore Turf Mile crown during Keeneland’s three-race Breeders’ Cup Challenge showcase Saturday.
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Three very different performances delivered the same coveted prize Saturday at Keeneland: an automatic starting position in the 2026 Breeders’ Cup.
Evanescence caught a determined pacesetter in the final strides of the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2), American History swept from last to first in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1), and Rhetorical controlled the Coolmore Turf Mile (G1) from the front.
Evanescence Arrives in Time in Thoroughbred Club of America
Evanescence overcame a slightly tardy beginning and wore down Praying to capture the $400,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes by a neck.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz for trainer Eddie Kenneally, the daughter of Munnings settled in the middle of the field while Praying established the pace through fractions of 22.78 and 45.86 seconds.
Ortiz moved Evanescence four wide entering the stretch. Praying had dispatched the other early challengers and appeared capable of finishing the job, but Evanescence continued to grind away on the outside. She finally edged past the leader approximately 30 yards from the finish.
Evanescence completed 6½ furlongs over a fast track in 1:16.57. Praying held second, 4¾ lengths ahead of Eclatant, with Echo Sound fourth. The victory preserved Evanescence’s perfect record at Keeneland.
The win earned Evanescence a guaranteed berth in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).

American History Goes Last to First in Breeders’ Futurity
American History took a major step forward in the two-year-old division with a sweeping late run in the $650,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
The Todd Pletcher-trained colt broke slowly under John Velazquez and trailed the field as Q B Rocket established fractions of 23.52, 46.54 and 1:10.52. Coach Pope applied steady pressure to the leader, and the two juveniles entered the stretch locked in a prolonged duel.
American History, meanwhile, began advancing around the outside on the backstretch. Still about five lengths behind entering the final portion of the race, he rallied powerfully on his left lead and rapidly erased the advantage held by the dueling leaders.
Velazquez guided American History past Coach Pope in the final 20 yards, completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.88 and winning by one length. Coach Pope secured second by a neck over the game Q B Rocket.

The Constitution colt, owned by WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and CHC, is now unbeaten through two starts after winning his August 22 debut at Saratoga. His Keeneland performance identified him as both a leading Breeders’ Cup contender and an early name for the 2027 Triple Crown trail.
American History received an automatic starting position in the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).
Rhetorical Repeats in Coolmore Turf Mile
Rhetorical turned a favorable pace scenario into his second consecutive victory in the $1.25 million Coolmore Turf Mile.
Breaking alertly under Irad Ortiz Jr., Rhetorical established command and was permitted to dictate unusually comfortable fractions of 24.73, 49.76 and 1:14.07 over firm turf.
Zulu Kingdom tracked the leader and drew alongside approaching the stretch, but Rhetorical had plenty left. The William Walden trainee rebuffed that challenge, accelerated clear entering the final furlong and maintained a 2¼-length advantage to the wire.
Rhetorical completed the mile in 1:36.35. Lake Forest recovered from a slow beginning and traffic in the stretch to finish second, edging Title Role by a neck. Brilliant Berti was another head behind in fourth, while Zulu Kingdom weakened to fifth.

The victory reinforced Rhetorical’s standing among the country’s leading turf milers. In addition to repeating in the Keeneland race, the five-year-old gelding captured the Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic (G1) earlier in 2026.
Rhetorical earned a return trip to the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), a race in which he finished fourth last year.
Saturday’s three Challenge winners reached their destinations in contrasting fashion: Evanescence with a relentless late drive, American History with a dramatic last-to-first rally, and Rhetorical through measured control and a decisive final-furlong acceleration.
Elsewhere on the card, Classic Q won the First Lady Stakes (G1) and Joe Shiesty captured the Woodford Stakes (G2). Those were significant graded victories, but unlike the Thoroughbred Club of America, Breeders’ Futurity and Coolmore Turf Mile, they were not designated Breeders’ Cup Challenge races on Saturday’s program.
