Mr Yoshito Yahagi, trainer of champion FOREVER YOUNG, shared the following comments following the 2nd place of FOREVER YOUNG in the G1 DUBAI WORLD CUP 2026:
“There’s no excuse. Ryusei (jockey Sakai) rode him perfectly. I thought we had managed the horse’s condition well from Saudi to Dubai, and there was no urine test issue like last year, but the result simply didn’t come. I think the number one issue is the trainer’s own shortcomings.
After the race, we discussed it as a team and analysed the reasons for the defeat. At this stage, considering the drop in performance here in Dubai, I suspect it is the track surface. The sand is slightly different from that in America or Saudi Arabia, and he didn’t have that strong feel of holding the bit and surging forward as before. It felt like watching the old Forever Young.
Under these circumstances we really wanted to win, but I want to praise the horse and the staff who worked so hard. I am truly proud of them. The horse has returned safely, so going forward we will consult with the owner about future plans.
It was good that Daisuke (trainer Takayanagi) won. We helped each other with saddling and preparations, and on race day the whole Team Japan worked together. We only managed one win, but it was really pleasing to see that victory.”
They are due to fly back on 4th April and arrive in Japan on the 5th
